Abortion is the termination of pregnancy by the removal of an embryo of fetus from the uterus. Abortion can occur spontaneously due to complication during pregnancy or can be induced and may result in death. Methods to induce abortion include traditional, herbal, and modern medicine, the use of sharpened tools and also by surgical procedure.
In Malaysia, abortion is permitted if there is a risk to the woman's mental or physical health. The government is also reviewing Section 312 of the Penal Code to include abortion in cases of rape or incest, as well as in situations where the unborn child may suffer from physical or mental abnormalities.
There are four main causes of abortion:
a. Fear of what people might think or say. They are likely to hide their pregnancy and delay seeking help due to family, social, cultural and religious stigma.
b. Fear of financial constraints when raising the child due to lack of insufficient monetary resources by parents.
c. Rape is a horrible abuse with traumatic consequences for many of its victims. Abortion should only be an option for young girls who end up pregnant as a result of rape and incest.
d. Efforts towards population control, such as China’s one child policy.
Side effects may occur with induced abortion, whether surgical or by pill. Consider the risks of abortion and its complications which include :
a. Heavy bleeding : Some bleeding after abortion is normal. However if the cervix is torn or punctured, there is a risk of heavy bleeding and this may require surgery to stop the bleeding.
b. Infection : Infection can develop from the insertion of medical instruments into the uterus that are mistakenly left inside (known as an incomplete abortion). It can cause scarring of the pelvic organs.
c. Damage to the cervix : The cervix may be cut, torn or damaged by surgical instruments.
d. Anesthesia : Complication from general anesthesia used during abortion may result in heart attack and in extreme cases - death.
Besides that, there is evidence that abortion is associated with a decrease in both emotional and physical health. Some of the symptoms are :
a. Eating disorders
b. Relationship problems
c. Depression and flashbacks of abortion
d. Sexual dysfunction
